Avicon

Avicon is a systems integration and consulting company focusing on improving our clients' supply chain performance. Avicon was founded in August 1998 and is backed by Odeon Capital Partners and BancBoston Ventures.

November 2003 – Present:       Vice President of Operations

In November 2003, I was appointed VP of Operations, while maintaining the CTO responsibilities. As VP of Operations, I am responsible for:

  • Project profitability and delivery team gross margin
  • Staffing and resource management for all Avicon projects
  • General operations reporting & management

August 2001:       IT Operations Manager

In August 2001, I assumed responsibility for IT operations, in addition to the CTO role. In 2002, I worked with a small team to return Avicon to profitability and redefine our market position as 'The Architects of the New Supply Chain'.

I was the sales lead, executive sponsor and chief architect for our single largest engagement in 2002, achieving annual revenues of $2.4M in CY2002 at over 65% gross margin. This project was done in close collaboration with client teams in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

June 2000 – August 2001:       Chief Technology Officer

  • Technology leadership and executive management of our largest accounts:
    • Design and development of a complete eBusiness solution for a real-estate trust;
    • Development of a world-wide eLogistics strategy for a major manufacturer of networking equipment;
    • Design of the technology infrastructure for a telecommunications manufacturer to support the migration from build-to-forecast to build-to-order
    • Design, development and worldwide deployment of the logistics outsourcing IT infrastructure for one of the largest logistics providers worldwide
  • Introduced project management methodology (PMI) to move Avicon from a time & materials business model to becoming a project-based systems integration and consultancy firm
  • Lead the development for Avicon's key offerings in the systems integration space, including RFID, DNA for the New Supply Chain, and XEAF (Extended Enterprise Architecture Framework)
  • Worked with many of the worlds supply chain and logistics leaders, e.g., Nortel, Cisco, UPS, Solectron, Schenker, and Kuehne-Nagel.

I was the sales lead and executive sponsor for one of Avicon's largest engagements in FY2001, resulting in $1.8M of revenue.

Servicesoft Technologies

Servicesoft Technologies, an eService product company, acquired Internet Business Advantages in December 1999 to emphasize its solution focus and create a strong professional services capability.

December 1999 – May 2000:       Vice President of Solutions Engineering

  • Successfully managed the ex-IBA delivery teams and all ex-IBA projects through the transition to Servicesoft Technologies while maintaining our revenue stream
  • Defined the Professional Services Practices and the North American Deployment Model in conjunction with the Servicesoft Professional Services Management Team

Internet Business Advantages

  • Responsible for the definition of IBA’s methodologies and technological excellence in delivery
  • Extended IBA’s delivery capability by adding JAVA/CORBA/EJB delivery competence
  • Introduced UML (Unified Modeling Language) and defined a UML and PMI (Project Management Institute) based delivery methodology for all solution development projects.
  • Defined standard technology architecture in support of Intranet/Extranet/Internet applications

1999:                  Vice President of Engineering and Methodologies

  • Responsible for the definition of IBA's methodologies and technological excellence in delivery
  • Extended IBA's delivery capability by adding JAVA/CORBA/EJB delivery competence
  • Introduced UML (Unified Modeling Language) and defined a UML and PMI (Project Management Institute) based delivery methodology for all solution development projects.

1998 – 1999:                  Technical Director

  • Developed eService strategies for several IBA clients (EMC, HP Medical Group, Marcam Solutions, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, Teradyne) and created a generalized eServices framework for IBA
  • Developed IBA’s Knowledge Management Methodology in support of eService (presented at KM World’99 in Dallas, TX)
  • Lead the development of knowledge management solutions for several clients (EMC, CIGNA, UnumProvident)
  • Defined the technology partnerships for IBA, which contributed $1.2 M of revenue in 1999.

1996 – 1998:                  Senior Technical Consultant

  • Established Microsoft technology platform as IBA’s initial delivery platform (Microsoft IIS, ASP, COM, SQL Server)
  • Lead the development of several eService applications in the areas of online customer-support, online license-key distribution and online help desk

Digital Equipment Corporation

1996:                               Technology Manager for Altavista Business Unit

Reported directly to the CIO of the Internet Software Business Unit. Responsible for the design and implementation of the computing infrastructure for the business unit and its external web sites.

1994 – 1996:                  Technology Manager for Accounts Business Unit

The Accounts Business Unit was responsible for all direct sales worldwide. I reported directly to the CIO of the Accounts Business Unit, who managed an annual IT budget of $120M.

1992 – 1994:                  Researcher and Principal Software Engineer

Digital Equipment hired me to join their Corporate Research and Architecture as a member of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group led by Prof. John McDermott. My research focused on the analysis of business processes and development of business-process supporting IT environments, and the definition of development and run-time environments to support flexible solutions of people, processes and information technology.

German National Research Institute for Mathematics and Data Processing

1987 – 1992:                  Researcher

Member of the Expert Systems (later Artificial Intelligence) Research Group.

August 1989:                 Guest Researcher at ICOT (Tokyo),

ICOT was the central research laboratory for the Japanese Fifth Generation Computer Systems Research Project. I was invited by the Fifth Laboratory of ICOT to work with their Knowledge Engineering Group.
