THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

was founded over a century ago by Australian actor Frederick Matthias Alexander to enhance the way we breathe and move. In recent years, the technqiue has become increasingly popular as the importance of the mind-body connection gains acceptance. This technique offers a unique way of improving balance, coordination, and mobility of the human body with methods that free the body of unnecessary muscular tension, which can cause fatigue, pain and limited movement.

I found my way to the Alexander Technique about 2 years ago. I was experiencing lower back pain. After several doctor appointments and a regular amount of pain killers I was able to control my pain. I was sure though that I hadn't found the real source of my back pain. I had heard about the Alexander Technique before at a horsemen's conference and so I decided to check it out. Looking around in my area, I found Jill Geiger, a certified S.T.A.T, N.A.S.T.A.T. teacher that also had some experience with horseback riders and I scheduled my first appointment. The first few lessons won me over completely and my back pain cleared. Now I take lessons on a regular basis. I also greatly enjoy the effect the Alexander Technique has on my riding. I improved my riding position, balance and gained a different sense of feel for my horse.

If you are an avid rider and interested in the Alexander Technique I highly recommend the books "BodySense", Revolutionize Your Riding with the Alexander Technique, by Sally A. Tottle and "Riding Success without Stress", Introducing the Alexander Technique, by Joni Bentley.
Also check out Robert Rickover's website "The Complete Guide to the Alexander Technique" which includes a lot interesting information and links to related sites.
